About the Prairie Horticulture Certificate

  • The Prairie Horticulture Certificate (PHC) provides all the essential tools to work in the horticulture industry, advance your career, start your own business, work or volunteer in your community and expand your gardening hobby.

  • PHC is a distance certificate program for the horticulture industry; it is the first home study horticulture program designed specifically for the Prairie Provinces. It was developed for both professionals working in the horticulture industry and gardening enthusiasts.

  • All coursework, assignments, and exams are completed online. Students are required to have a personal computer equipped with internet access. Basic common computer literacy skills are also a must. These skills should include word processing, email and file sharing/collaboration tools, internet and database navigation.

  • It is flexibly designed as an asynchronous part-time program without scheduled class times so you can balance work, school and life. Expect to work eight to 15 hours per week for a 60-hour course (.6) and approximately four to ten hours for a 30-hour (.3) course. Scheduling time for and staying on top of course content and assignment deadlines also requires a level of self-directed commitment from each student.

A maximum of four courses (approximately 50% of the program) may be transferred from other institutions that are not part of the consortium (University of Saskatchewan, Assiniboine Community College and Olds College of Agriculture and Technology).

If the University of Saskatchewan is your chosen home institution, please download the application form and submit to the PHC Program Office for review. For purposes of transfer credits, official transcripts and comprehensive course outlines must be submitted with the form.
