Prairie Horticulture Certificate

(PHC)

College of Agriculture and Bioresources

A distance certificate program for the horticulture industry as well as gardening enthusiasts.

To obtain your Certificate, complete the required number of core courses, together with the courses specified for a particular stream, and maintain an overall weighted average of 60%; a total of nine courses equal to 360 hours (36 credit weights) represents the minimum requirement.

You may also take courses for personal interest or professional upgrading.

Required Courses:

  • Applied Botany (U of S) 
    Note: foundational course; start with this one
  • Soils for Horticulture (U of S)
    Note: foundational course; take this one after you have taken Applied Botany
  • Postharvest Handling of Food Crops (ACC)

and at least three of:

  • Integrated Plant Management (Olds)
  • Safework/Pesticide Application (ACC)
  • Basics of Horticulture Marketing (Olds)
  • Basics of Horticulture Business Management (Olds)

and at least two of:

  • Vegetable Production (U of S)
  • Fruit Production (U of S)
  • Propagation (Olds)

PLUS an Open Elective course (if necessary) to meet the minimum requirements.

Required Courses

  • Applied Botany (U of S)

  • Soils for Horticulture (U of S) 
    Note: foundational course; take this one after you have taken Applied Botany
  • Woody Landscape Plants (U of S)
  • Arboriculture (Olds)

and at least three of

  • Integrated Plant Management (Olds)
  • Safework/Pesticide Application (ACC)
  • Basics of Horticulture Marketing (Olds)
  • Basics of Horticulture Business Management (Olds)

and at least two of

  • Landscape Design (Olds)
  • Landscape Construction (Olds)
  • Indoor Landscaping (U of S)
  • Turfgrass Production and Management (ACC)
  • Herbaceous Landscape Plants (Olds)

 PLUS an Open Elective course (if necessary) to meet the minimum requirements.

Greenhouse Crop Production Stream

Required Courses:

  • Applied Botany (U of S) 
    Note: foundational course; start with this one
  • Soils for Horticulture (U of S) 
    Note: foundational course; take this one after you have taken Applied Botany
  • Greenhouse Crop Production (Olds)
  • Greenhouse Structures and Environments (Olds)

and at least three of

  • Integrated Plant Management (Olds)
  • Safework/Pesticide Application (ACC)
  • Basics of Horticulture Marketing (Olds)
  • Basics of Horticulture Business Management (Olds)

and at least one of

  • Indoor Landscaping (U of S)
  • Propagation (Olds)

  • Field Production of Floral Crops (Olds)
  • Human Resource Management (ACC)
  • OR any course from another elective stream

Once you are admitted to the University of Saskatchewan, you can register for any PHC courses. All courses taken from participating institutions are treated as if they had been taken from the University of Saskatchewan.
